Reflecting its grassroots' origins, the Hyde Park Farmers' Market will kick off its premiere season with a grand opening celebration featuring local farmers and representatives of the several community groups that helped create the market. There will also be music and activities for kids. The opening is set for Saturday, May 24th at 9:00 a.m. at the market site at the Hyde Park Drive-In on Route 9 in Hyde Park.

"Come early for the festivities," advises Dot Chenevert, chairman of The Farmers' Market Committee. "After a brief opening event, our vendors will be open for business throughout the morning, closing at 2:00 p.m." The market will be open every Saturday from May 24th through November 1st from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

In addition to vegetables, fruits and berries, there will be artisanal breads and cheeses, wines, honeys, jams and jellies, flowers and more. Market vendors include Bread Alone, Breezy Hill Orchards, Cascade Winery, Brittney Hollow Farm, The Green Oak Florist and others.

A special weekly attraction will be chefs and students from The Culinary Institute of America, who will demonstrate cooking with fresh ingredients from the market. "Strengthening the connections between local farmers, chefs and home cooks is vital," notes Chenevert, "so we're thrilled to have the CIA as a partner in the market." During the month of July, when the CIA is closed, chefs from local restaurants will be featured.

The Farmers' Market Committee, which grew out of The Hyde Park Corridor Committee, developed the market with the support of The Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, Scenic Hudson Land Trust, which owns the Drive-In, and The Town of Hyde Park. "The co-operation and enthusiasm among the civic groups and the farmers has been extraordinary," Chenevert says. "Elizabeth Ryan, of Breezy Hill Orchards, helped us organize from the beginning. There's been a lot of excitement among Hyde Parkers about the market. It will be a tremendous success."
